Just when you thought activewear had reached the pinnacle of its popularity, think again! Back when I started this blog with just workout #ootd’s, I knew the subject of living life in stretchy everything would be entirely possible and soon completely mainstream (thank God). However, in the back of my head, I secretly hoped it would continue to take over our lives echelon by echelon. Good news, it’s made its way into couture editorial fashion, and it shows no signs of stopping.
Where did it start?
I have to thank our sporty streetwear pioneers for this: Jordans lovers, Yeezy fans, Supreme, I’m talkin’ to you. Now more than ever, sneakers and traditional streetwear are considered completely acceptable almost anywhere, even the runway or red carpet. After moving to New York, I made it a point to fall into the New York streetwear abyss on Instagram. I wanted to get a true feel for all my fellow street enthusiasts here in the city. My virtual journey down the rabbit hole was so inspiring, and I landed on a page that really spoke to me, that of Aimee Nielsen!
What’s couture activewear?
When you think couture activewear, you probably think of my family over at Carbon38 or on Bandier (F&F sale RN!), and you’re not all wrong. However, when it comes to actual formal modern designs (dresses, skirts, non-workout specific designs), no one has captured it in a truly editorial way. Aimee makes some seriously rad skirts! Ones that make me want to walk a red carpet or crash a Sports Illustrated swim photo shoot.
This skirt is truly one of my all-time fave pieces in my active/streetwear wardrobe. It’s also one that will definitely be worn in more formal settings in the near future. This post is one of a few I’ll be releasing over the next week, showcasing the versatility of her designs. I’m also feeling a serious need to head to Art Basel this year in Miami with it. This thing needs to walk around Wynwood.
