Let’s talk fitness predictions for 2020: have you ever wondered what’s to come when it comes to your future workout preferences? This year’s most popular posts for you as readers were my predictions series for fashion and beauty earlier this year. Since then, I expanded my analysis to include your third most popular category: fitness. As summer comes to a close and next season’s Fashion Weeks approach, the future awaits us, and that includes your fitness trends. Are Soul Cycle and Equinox on your sh*t list rn? Cool, here are some other options to consider:
Ever wish you could just take a fucking pill and get instant results? Newsflash: it exists, almost. This isn’t that exactly, but it’s mind-blowingly close. EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) isn’t just for physical therapy anymore. During workouts, it allows you to work more muscles than with weights alone and takes a whopping 20 minutes to complete a full session. Seriously: you get the results of a 90-minute workout: complete in 20. I’ve worked with my personal trainer consistently for three months and started seeing visible results inside/out after a month and a half. My first month, I trained twice a week, and now train once a week. Curious? Check out my studio who started it all: they recently opened a location in New York, and have multiple throughout Florida! You even get your first week free to try it out, no bullshit. Not sponsored, just a major PSA to you.
DNA & Genetic Testing
As a science nerd, this gets me so motivated! Nowadays, it’s possible to use technology and science-backed methods to guide our wellness journeys. If you’re following me on Instagram, you’ll know I tried one of those at-home DNA tests to better understand my body’s genetics and how it relates to my physical abilities. The results? I have a combo of fast/slow-twitch muscles, which makes me a prime candidate to be a successful runner/fighter, but not so great at powerlifting. It was so eye-opening! I’ve adjusted my workouts to focus on bringing out my personal best through workouts designed for my body composition. You can too, read more about their tailored tests here.
Karate Kids fans, your time has come back around again. You can thank boxing for starting that wave of popularity for fighting techniques a couple of years back. Since then, martial arts classes have been having a minute over the past year and a half and I’m all here for it. What’s more practical for your physical health (and smart in general) than learning how to defend yourself? Fun fact: I’ve practiced Taekwondo since I was about 7, and ended with a second-degree black belt when I was around 15. It helped me learn to control my anger and gave me the confidence to face tough situations. Especially as a woman. Ladies, I highly encourage you to consider taking a few classes. There is nothing more powerful than learning how to protect yourself. In today’s day and age, we have all the tools at our disposal to drive down the horrible statistics of assault or abduction. It’s also a secret weapon of movie stars. Did you my Krav Maga studio trains actors for roles as superheroes? Kristen Ritter and the cast of Jessica Jones was one group of them!
At-Home Workouts & Artificial Intelligence
The techie in me LOVES where the fitness industry is going. As a busy Manhattanite, I find it nearly impossible to always make my workout classes given my busy work schedule. Good news my fellow 9-5ers: you got OPTIONS. I’m talking mirrors that double as gyms, apps that allow you to virtually swim alongside Olympians, and apps that use AI to optimize your fitness goals. I’ve personally tried MoveWith and ClassPass Live, and love that I can use it on the road during biz trips. So, fuck your excuses: download an app and take back control of your fitness routine.
