Alright, guys. I’ve got a confession to make.
It’s obvious I love my activewear and sportier trends, however, this may come as a shock: I wore activewear in EVERY outfit every day during my time at New York Fashion Week. Yep: EVERY outfit, every show, every event. I’m sure some of you are wondering how on earth you can get away with blending in your favorite stretchy activewear into fashion show appropriate attire, and I’m here to tell you: ANYTHING is possible if you believe in yourself. This season, I was super excited to see even more athletic-inspired trends on the runway (Chromat, Public School, Fenty x Puma), so I felt even more comfortable this season getting a little more audacious in my stylings.
The key to bridging the gap between gym attire and street style lies in layers. It’s about incorporating a specific note of the active piece you are adding in with a similar style in your street appropriate pieces. Blending two codes of dress is tricky: you never want to add in more than two pieces. At that point, it begins to look more like post gym athleisure. Since mesh and fishnets are making a huge splash for fall, I grabbed my go-to Michi Bras and used two different colors and styles for the entire trip (when I wasn’t adding Agent Provocateur sets underneath) underneath low plunging gowns and sheer tops. They added the glamorous grunge look I was going for this season, and actually made the softer notes of my dresses pop!
Activewear at NYFW: The Consensus
So…how did it go over, you ask? Pretty freaking stellar. On my first day for Chromat’s show, I chose a blue power pantsuit (on sale!!) to channel my inner boss girl vibes, with only the Michi Bionic bra underneath, and a killer statement necklace from BaubleBar and Fenty cap. I got tons of attention from street style photographers, and even got pulled in for a quick photo shoot for IMG x Lexus in front of the entrance to the shows! Stay tuned for these pictures later. The most common comment I got was how original edgy it was, and it was the outfit I got stopped the most for to pose for street style photos and to spill the details for reporters.
This dress was one of my favorites of the week. Kimonos are my jam these days, I love a staple elegant dress with Japanese style details. As you know, I live in a pretty black and white world, and usually only incorporate cooler toned colors into my outfit mixes. Red was a fun way to break out of my comfort zone this season! I am all about changing the stigma of fashion, that you can feel comfortable AND glamorous in your outfits, regardless of the code of dress. This dress was light and full of movement, and the asymmetrical hemline made it so easy to relax and actually take in the wonders of Fashion Week. I was able to live in the moment, not uncomfortable and in my head. ASOS slays the dress game, and mini spoiler alert: I will be adding in pieces from their site for my upcoming street fashion series, so stay tuned!
