What’s In My Cabinet: Summer Skincare 2021

Summer Skincare

Summer skincare: what’s the recipe? Summer will wreak havoc on your skin if you aren’t nourishing it with the proper ingredients. How often do you swap your skincare products? I’m willing to bet some of the products in your cabinet right now are adding to the problems you’re seeing in your skin this month. Welcome to your complete summer skincare guide, full of all the products and ingredients that should be front and center.

Summer Skincare Ingredient Musts

Certain ingredients and formulas that rock your world in the winter aren’t going to cut it with the same gusto. Here’s why: as the weather shifts, so do your skin’s needs. Especially if you live in a more humid climate during the warmer months. These are the ingredients you need to bring to the forefront of your cabinet right now.

Micellar Water/Gel Cleansers

Swapping out your cleanser is honestly one of the biggest changes you’ll need to make. Creamy/balm cleansers are great for colder months but can be somewhat heavy for warmer climates. While these balms may be appropriate for dry skin types, it’s still good to balance your skin with something lighter during summer. Opt for a lighter or gel-based cleanser instead. Micellar water is a great swap that still removes makeup effectively. Especially for dry skin, as gel cleansers aren’t always a great fit. All my favorites are listed below.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is wildly effective at removing excess oil from your face. This is the key during summer: as the temperatures rise, so does oil production in our skin. Picking a second cleanser to remove excess oil will help combat this issue. I prefer to do a double cleanse in the evening after wearing makeup all day, or a heavy, tinted sunscreen. It will cut through these products like a champ to reveal clearer skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

This is a hydrator, so it’s honestly a universal ingredient I use year-round. It’s what you pair with it that makes the difference in the summer. Opt to swap out your heavier moisturizers with a hyaluronic acid based one instead. It’s a nice compliment to the serum. You’ll notice your makeup will start to sit better with a lighter formula. Using a heavy moisturizer full of glycerin/ceramides can drag down your makeup. Especially if you have oily skin like me.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is great year-round, but it really shines in the summer. It helps boost your skin’s antioxidant defenses, which is key during months when the sun is harsher. It also gets to work in reducing sun spots and boosting brightness. I like to use it in serum form, but you can layer different products at different times for an added boost. Think that’s it? Nope: it protects against photo damage, which is crucial for months where you’re likely in the sun more often. All my favorite quality picks are below.
