Blame the macroeconomist in me, but I love figuring out trends and how they affect the future. Whether it’s finance or fashion related, there are always hints in the present day that give hints to the future. As far back as I can remember, I would spend hours in my room reading outside the mainstream: Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and The Economist. As time went on, I’d see certain trends/theories in the past pop up in present-day articles, street style, and the general population. Coincidence? I think not. As a senior in college, it became abundantly clear to me that just like economic trends, fashion followed somewhat suit. What’s this mean to you? I’m cracking the code on 2019 fashion and beauty trends, starting with fashion below.
The Code
There’s a method to the madness. Exactly 2-3 years, to be totally fucking transparent. Remember when Lululemon stole the workout style show? 2006. By 2009, leggings and sportswear became mainstream to the everyday outfit, appropriate from the gym to dinner. I was into it. I started thinking about every other form of fashion and turns out, the numbers never lie.
Statement Sleeves
I began seeing little blips of this trend emerging back in 2017, namely when Carbon 38 began to release tops and half zips with elaborate sleeves. You might even remember it from my New York Fashion Week coverage from that year, here. Since then, it’s shown zero signs of slowing down. In fact, IMO, I believe we are headed right back into the epicenter of 80’s glamour. So get on it, sweetie: it’s picked up exponentially into mainstream fashion (dad sneakers y’all), some of my favorite pieces include designs by Revolve, INSPR, and Carbon 38:
Tie Dye
For my little 70’s babes, not to worry, tie-dye is back at it again, this time, way chicer. I’ve worn it sparingly in the past few years (mainly in a sporty way), get ready to see it take over in a huge way in the next few seasons! I’m guessing it will really hit its stride in a couple of years, as that’s usually the time it takes to hit mainstream from the runway/high fashion.
Patchwork
Did you miss the tiny hints of deconstruction from designers like Gypsy Sport and Alexander Wang over the past 2 years? Here’s your tip: patchwork, exposed seams are going to be all over 2019. Think handbags, dress patterns, you name it. Some of my favorite pieces are linked below for you to rock this trend first in your circle of friends!
Yellow
My least favorite color in the world has managed to captivate me. I blame the last few years. Neons have been a thing for a minute, and get ready for the yellow tone to come through on all facets:
Corduroy
Another thing I begrudgingly wore from grade school now takes the center stage. Others included crew socks and scrunchies. I’m actually excited to see it reimagined in a new way! Check my picks below:
