Who else is experiencing bi-polar spring weather? It’s frustratingly alive and well here in New York. That said, I’m finding the silver lining in my dress code, and playing around with hybrid styling. One of my favorite go-to’s is the sweatshirt + skirt combo. If you think this sounds ridiculous, I hear ya. It’s not mainstream…yet. However, do know the sweatshirt + skirt combo is nothing new or a Mandy pairing: take it from industry expert, Eva Chen and her killer styling this past fall. My fellow private school ladies will also know what’s up! Street styled leisurewear shows no signs of stopping; you can expect it to transcend leggings and hit every corner of the mainstream styling strategies here soon. Now, how do you master it? Follow these 3 guidelines if you’re just starting out:
Follow your body type.
This is obviously not a rule specific only to this trend, but it’s super important when bringing in oversized pieces like sweatshirts. If you’re styling a higher waisted skirt, choose a sweatshirt that hits you at your natural waistline, for a flattering fit. If you’re styling in a boyfriend hoodie, opt for a shorter more structured or slimmer fit skirt.
Balance patterns / materials.
While I’m all for mixing patterns outside of streetwear, it can often be a little much when it comes to a hybrid look. I like to pair solids with statement skirts, or sweatshirts with a sleeker logo. If you’re styling a plain skirt, play up the top portion with a fun patterned or embellished sweatshirt. I also love pairing simple logos with stripes, it makes for a fun yet somewhat monochromatic look.
Layer your sweatshirt dress.
If you’re dying to pull out some of your spring sweatshirt dresses, but the weather still sucks, layer it with another longer skirt of different texture underneath! I did this on a more formal level earlier this year and loved the outcome. These days, it’s all about adding fun, unconventional layers to really get that street styled fashionista feel.
