Day jobs and side hustles that aren’t just hobbies have become somewhat of a societal norm in today’s millennial-driven entrepreneurial world. It reminded me of something as I jumped through the hurdles of NYFW and a busy summer of work travel. This norm was far from “normal” a few years ago. It even used to be a source of discontent for some of those around us. Yes, doing it all can be exciting, rewarding, and a constant adventure. But what about some of the loose ends it creates within our personal lives? It imposes a thought: is ambition always doomed to be a double-edged sword?
My Start
As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a burning desire to challenge myself while also making time for activities that center me and fuel my ability to learn. To the outside world, it wasn’t always easy to see and often got me off on the wrong foot with my peers. College was a perfect example. In my eyes, I was walking into the greatest learning opportunity ever granted. I wanted to run through it all, taking in all I could so I could learn how to apply it. That especially went for my extra-curriculars: sports,/cheer, and music. As I evolved as a soloist, I, in turn, evolved in another facet as a leader. It did lead me away from day to day events with peers, which was seen in a different way. To me, our journeys would still be the same, but there would be things that would make each of ours completely different. Differences that would shape us into better versions of ourselves.
Doing It All: In Execution
Yeah, it’s a messy shitshow sometimes, but that’s just life. Learn to ride with the wave, and if you fail, learn and re-execute. Never let a passion of yours slip away because of poor time management. The secret you’re dying to know is just that, time. Thanks to screen time, we are now able to get real data on ourselves. Use it! Dropping off a few minutes here and there will open up blocks of time later. As a result, you’ll find you have a lot more free time. I turned my wasted time into consistent workouts over the summer. Same goes for social outings. I sometimes surprise myself on how well I was able to get things together. You’ve got it in you too, guaranteed. Just slap it out of yourself, or worse, like a good old wax session.
Why You Shouldn’t Feel Ashamed
We learn by challenging ourselves and become better people by learning to care for ourselves first. Our passions shape who we are and even augment our career and leadership skills. What’s more BOSS than that, friends? What I’ve learned is passion is integral in building a fulfilled life. If you feel something is missing, take a small step toward what moves you. The rest of your life will follow suit. Which is, beyond fabulous.
